Matariki Explanation

 What Is Matariki All About

By Duke Evans

What I am explaining is Why we celebrate Matariki, When is Matariki celebrated and What is matariki?

Matariki is the Maori New Year traditionally, Matariki was used to determine the harvesting of the season's crop and planning for the next crops.

Matariki is celebrated in May to July or June next year. This year it will be celebrated on Friday 24 of June. It is based on the lunar calendar. Matariki is a big cluster of stars and it is a chance to tell story's about what funny things that have happened or tell scary story's. This is my example of my dad, one time he was about 3 years old and he was going on a jet boat. And he saw Edmund Hillary and he took a picture with him that is a important story to my dad.

Matariki is a time for celebration, growth and renewal. And the Maori new year which is super fun to celebrate you could try it.

Matariki is a chance to get together and remember whānau who have died. Also share food, tell stories, sing and play. And eat a lot of food. And tell story's about important family members.

For Matariki my family could make some Matariki biscuits or make Matariki art and a cake.

The children of the earth mother Papatuanuku and sky father, Ranginui, were divided over whether to separate them and bring light and life to the earth. Eventually, Tane Mahuta, the god of the forest, laid on his back and used his feet to force them apart.  Tāwhirimātea through his eyes to make the clusters of the stars

Matariki is a day to stay up. I love to stay up with my cousins and look at the sky and look at matariki in the sky.

Matariki is also known as the Maori new year and matariki is the cluster of the nine sisters.

Have a great day!

Earths Layers

For inquiry we have been working with urmi for the past week. It has been lots of fun, but now I am going to explain what is in side of earth and a little bit of the out side of the, earth.

The Core

Let’s start at the very center of the Earth. The word ‘core’ means the central part of something, for example, an apple has a core. The Earth has an inner core and an outer core. Scientists think that the inner core is solid and mainly made of iron. Iron is very hard – that’s why knights used it to make their armour. The outer core is also mostly iron, but this layer is liquid (melted) iron.

The mantle

The next layer is called the mantle. It is made of rock. It is very hot in this part of the Earth, causing the rock to behave a little bit like a liquid and a solid.

Have a great day!

The crust

The crust is the part of the Earth that we walk on. Compared to the other layers, it is quite thin and breakable. You can think of the crust of the Earth as being a bit like the crust of a pie – although this crust is 5–70 km deep depending on whether you are under the ocean or on top of a mountain! The Earth’s crust is not one continuous surface like on a tennis or soccer ball. The crust is ‘broken’ into enormous pieces called tectonic plates.

Tectonic plates

Scientists think that the crust of the Earth is made up of six large (major) tectonic plates and a few smaller ones. These plates fit together like puzzle pieces and float on the partially molten mantle. They slowly move and bump against each other at a rate of a few millimetres to up to 20 cm per year. It is this bumping and rubbing that causes earthquakes and volcanoes.
